Qualify for a $5,000 Canada Greener Homes grant
You could be eligible for a grant of up to $5,000 to help you make energy-efficient retrofits to your home through the Canada Greener Homes program.
Through a series of grants, the federal government gives Canadian homeowners an opportunity to reduce energy usage and save on their bills.
5 Steps to apply for the Greener Homes Grant
STEP 5: Apply for reimbursement
STEP 1
Register with for the Canada Greener Homes program
You must first register with Natural Resources Canada for Canada Greener Homes program either by phone or using the Canada Greener Homes web portal to enroll into the program. Please give The Home Inspectors Group a call and we can help you register or answer your questions.
STEP 2
Book your pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation
Complete a Pre-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation by one of our Registered Energy Advisors prior to the start of the reftrofit.
One of our Registered Energy Advisors, who will be following health safety protocols, will visit your home to conduct an Energy assessment. They will provide you with an EnerGuide evaluation report which includes customized recommendations of improvements for your home. You will also be provided an EnerGuide home rating and label.
You will be asked to provide:
- Proof of ownership with your property tax bill number (this number can be found on your municipal property documents)
- Proof of residence through either a driver’s licence or government issued ID (with address)
STEP 3
Complete your Retrofit to be Eligible
You must complete at least one retrofit that is eligible for the Canada Greener Homes Program. (All products must be purchased in Canada. Online purchases are only eligible if they are ordered from an online distributor located in Canada.)

Types of Eligible Retrofits
Home Insulation – Upgrade your attic/ceiling, exterior wall, exposed floor, basement or foundation, and crawl spaces

You must increase the insulation value (R-value or RSI).Add insulation in the same location (e.g., attic floor vs. attic ceiling) as the insulation present at the time of the pre-retrofit evaluation.

Semi and Row homes are prorated-The maximum you would be eligible for is 75% of the listed amounts. For a middle unit row house, the maximum grant you would qualify for is 50% of the listed amounts.
The total amount of your reimbursement will be calculated based on the total percentage of your wall that you choose to insulate. This means if you insulate 80% of your wall area, you would qualify for 80% of the amount

Exposed Floor Insulation
Prorated based on minimum 20% completed excluding foundation walls.
Add at least R20 to 100% | $660 |
Note: Note: Insulate the entire exposed floor area (minimum area of 11 square metres or 120 square feet).This can include overhangs and floors above unheated spaces such as an unheated garage.

Foundation Insulation

STEP 4
Book your post-Retrofit EnerGuide evaluation
Our Registered Energy Advisor will return to your home to evaluate the retrofits you completed. They will provide you with an updated EnerGuide rating. The post-retrofit evaluation shows how much energy has been saved, how much greenhouse gas emissions have reduced as a result of the retrofits. You will also receive an estimate of the incentive dollars you are expected to receive.
STEP 5
Apply for reimbursement
The Registered Energy Advisor responsibility: Upload your post-retrofit evaluation rating label to the federal government along with the before and after pictures.
Homeowner responsibility: Upload the receipts for your pre-and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluation and all receipts and invoices for products purchased and for installation costs. This is completed through the registration portal.
The Federal government will send you an incentive cheque based on the retrofits you completed in addition, you will enjoy the additional savings on each utility bill year after year.
Who is Eligible?
Eligible homeowners in Canada regardless of where they live can participate in the Canada Greener Homes program. Only one homeowner per home can register. You will be required to:
- provide proof of ownership with your property tax bill number (this number can be found on your municipal property tax documents)
- demonstrate the property is your primary residence through either a driver’s licence or government-issued ID (with address)
The following groups are also eligible applicants under the initiative:
- Indigenous governments or organizations (e.g., band councils, land claim organizations)
- housing management bodies and other representative or Indigenous service delivery organizations with formal partnerships with Indigenous governments or organizations
These applicants may be eligible to register multiple homes, including homes that are not the owner’s primary residence. The home registered must be owned by the applicant and be occupied by an Indigenous household.
Eligible property types:
- Single and semi-detached houses
- Row housing
- Townhomes
- Mobile homes on a permanent foundation
- Permanently-moored floating homes
- Mixed use buildings (residential portion only)
- Low- rise multi-unit residential buildings (three storeys or less with a footprint of 600m2 or less)
Cost of the Audits
- First Audit – $480+HST = $542.40
- Final Audit – $210+HST = $237.30
Up to $600 for the cost of your pre- and post-retrofit EnerGuide evaluations. You will not be reimbursed for the pre-retrofit evaluation unless you continue through the full Greener Homes Grant process.
